Inside and Outside bets

On this page we present the concept of inside and outside bets in the game of roulette, and we discuss the relative payoffs of every bet on the table. To begin with let's have a look at inside bets, and all the ways we can bet on a single number, and numbers beside one another on the table layout.

Inside Bets

As the name suggests inside bets are placed on the interior of the table layout. Have a look at the highlighted section of the roulette table presented above. Inside bets can be made on one number, or specific combinations of numbers. If two numbers lie beside one another on the table layout, you can bet on both numbers by placing your chips on the line that joins the two. This concept is recreated in as many ways as possible to make up all of the inside bets:

Straight-up bet - A bet on a single number. This pays back at 35 to 1.

Split bet - This bet places your chips down on the line between two numbers. This bet pays 17 to 1 if either of your chosen numbers come up.

Street bet - This bet places your chips on three different numbers simultaneously, if those three numbers are joined in a row. Placing your chips on the outside of a row in the table layout will split your bet over the three numbers in the row. This bet pays 11 to 1 on any of the three numbers hit.

Corner bet - Another combination wager, the corner bet places your chips on four adjoining numbers. Placing your chips at the point where four numbers meet will indicate a corner bet and split the value four ways. This is sometimes referred to as a square bet. If any of the four numbers hit, the payoff is 8 to 1.

Five number bet - There is only one five number bet available. Place your chips at the intersection of 0 and 1 on the corner to win on any of 0, 00, 1, 2, or 3. You are paid 6 to 1. Because of the alteration of payoff on this bet, it alters the house edge in the casinos favor, and becomes an unattractive bet.

Outside Bets

Outside bets deal with other characteristics of the winning number. Roulette rules allow for bets on the result being an odd number, a red number, or possessing a number of other characteristics. There are no winning outside bets for a result of zero or double zero.

Red or Black - Each number on the roulette wheel is either red, black, or green (zero and double zero). You can choose to bet on the outcome either being a red number, or a black number. There are an even number of each type on the board. Place this bet right in the area with the words 'red' or 'black' in them. This bet is paid even money, meaning if you bet $5, you win $5 and keep your bet for a total of $10. The odds of winning are slightly less than 50%.

Odd or Even- Similar to the red black bet, this even money bet is based on whether the number will be odd or even. Since 0 does not count as either, there are 36 numbers, an even count between odd and even. Place your chips in the middle of either the squares marked 'even' or 'odd'. This is an even money bet.

Low or high - This is a bet the result will be in the range of numbers from 1 to 18 (low), or 19 to 36 (high). This is an even money bet.

Columns - At one end of the set of 38 numbers are boxes with the words '2 to 1' written in them. Each box is part of a column of numbers. If a number from within the column you are betting on comes up you win, and are paid 2 to 1.

Dozens - Allows placement of a bet on either the first dozen numbers (1-12), the second dozen (13-24), or the third dozen (25-36). The betting areas will usually be labeled with the words 1st 12, 2nd 12, 3rd 12. This bet pays 2 to 1.
